Writer's Block from LiveJournal.com

The boogeyman, global thermonuclear war, being forced to eat broccoli—there's a lot to be afraid of when you're a kid. What was your biggest childhood fear?

I was afraid of snakes! I mean like crazy scared. I used to go to books about animals and anything with a glossary in the back and look for what pages snakes were on, then skip those pages. I couldn't watch them on TV, touch a picture of them or do any outside stuff for fear of seeing one. There was a video on Friday Night Videos and there was one scene with a black snake crawling across the screen. I ended up hating that video and still picture it when I hear the song. My other fear is needles. I still have a little attack when I have to get blood drawn, but at 37 I can handle my fear inside. I do worry the whole week I know that I have to go. I have a little allergy to the needles, so I get a bruise, a small red rash and it burns like a bee sting for about 10 minutes after. So I just make it more dramatic in my mind. As an adult I have decided to get over my phobias. So I adopted lizards and joined the Herpetology Society. I learned to go in the snake house at our zoo, which I was always alone outside as a kid, teen and young adult wondering if any escaped and would be hiding in the grass around me. I do have a preference in my crazy phobia that I only like LARGE snakes like boas bc they can't hide and have little heads crawling up the glass. I started watching Fear Factor with snakes and watch Animal Planet on snakes a lot. My final thing that made me feel a little cured was I attended the Christmas party for the Herp Society and had dinner on the stoop in the snake house under the snake cages, but of course the large boa cage. As for needles, I have worked on that too. I have my ears pierced 2 on bottom of both ears, the tops done once and my inner ear. I got my tongue pierced for my 30th birthday. I kept getting something pierced on purpose to change fear to anticipation. My final thing that made me feel a little cured on this was I got a tattoo on my back. Basically for the purpose of handling the needles more than saying I have a tattoo. This is a personal journey for me, not to impress others.

  1. This is great...what you did to face your fears. I know I did well when my daughter told me that she was impressed with me putting my hand back into the oven after I was seriously burned. She knew that I have a fear of being burned.

  2. The greatest way to cure your fear is do the thing you fear the most... a big standing up round of applause for you! I have a love/hate thing with snakes. I love all animals and can hold a snake, too, but if one comes up on me without my knowing it, all hell breaks loose.

I don't have a fear of needles but I still admire your courage for getting your tongue pierced. That's always been way too scary for me, lol.
